Let’s Keep Music Alive!

Posted on 01.03.2010 under Uncategorized

Music fans like you make the Australian music scene what it is – so let’s keep music alive! Here are a few reasons why you should continue to support your favourite bands by getting their music legitimately, going to their concerts, and supporting them generally. The future of music is at stake.

Without your continued support, new acts can’t survive and create new music….

Did you know?

  • It cost Australian band ‘The Audreys’ $50,000 to make their last album?  In comparison to some rock albums, this is a drop in the ocean.
  • Only about 1 in 10 Aussie artists ever break even (ie cover the costs of the investment).  That’s because most albums cost a lot to make and market.
  • The majority of musicians have other jobs to support themselves which means less time to create music and tour for their fans.

So, by getting music legally, you are supporting your favourite bands so that they can cover the costs of making their album and have enough to make more great music for you to listen to in the future!

People who make music deserve to be paid for their hard work and passion. Why should being a musician be any different from any other job? Teachers, bus drivers and doctors all get paid for their work – surely artists deserve to?

Did you know?

  • Australians illegally file-share over a staggering 1 billion songs every year.  Globally, an estimated 95% of all track downloads are illegal with no payment to the makers of the music.
  • Sadly, illegal file-sharing has a significant impact on artists and local music.  Declines in sales due to music piracy means that record labels have far less to invest in local artist development.  That means less new music for you.
  • Music piracy doesn’t just affect commercial acts.  Independent artist John Butler says that he sells 40% fewer records now because of illegal downloading.

Be the generation that keeps the music alive. By buying and supporting both international and local talent through your local record store or online music retailer, you are supporting new Australian acts hoping to break through!
